UN Women supporting Vietnam for implementation of commitments on gender equality and empowerment of women

On December 12th, in Hanoi, The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Vietnam held the Press Conference on the results of the visit and working of UN Women Executive Board Bureau in Vietnam, from December 8th – 12th.

Attending were Mr. Gonzalo Koncke Pizzorno, Permanent Resident Representative of Uruguay delegation at the United Nations, President of UN Women; Mrs. Soko Ishi Kawa, Representative of UN Women in Vietnam and members. Speaking at the Press Conference, Mr. Gonzalo Koncke Pizzorno - UN Women’s president said that during the working visit, the Delegation had a meeting with the Minister of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs Pham Thi Hai Chuyen; Minister Justice Ha Hung Cuong; Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs Truong Thi Mai and Deputy Minister Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc. The discussions have been focused on the achievements of Vietnam and the support of UN Women in promoting gender equality, empowerment of women, reduce the difficulties and challenges of gender in Vietnam.
UN Women Executive Board Bureau also visited Danang and Hue, had a meeting with leaders of the People's Committee of Da Nang City, the Vietnam Women's Association in Danang and Hue. On this occasion, the Delegation talked about the topic of violence against women and girls, the role of women in mitigation, coping with the effects of climate change.
Chairman Gonzalo Koncke Pizzorno emphasized that this working visit of the Delegation in Vietnam would increase the understanding of members of the UN Women Executive Board Bureau on the levels and methods of UN Women and the Government of Vietnam implementing in achieving gender equality and empowerment of women. This was the first visit of the UN Women Executive Board Bureau and Vietnam had been selected as the first destination. This was also an opportunity the Delegation understanding the progress of Vietnam in implementing the Millennium Development Goals, especially those related to the implementation of gender equality and empowerment of women; simultaneously exploring Vietnam's priorities for the future.
Assessing the achievements and progress made by Vietnam to achieve gender equality, empowerment of women, Mr. Gonzalo Koncke Pizzorno expressed the satisfaction about the process of mainstreaming gender equality and empowerment of women, building legal framework in Vietnam; at the same time, pointing out the challenges to promote the active participation of men and boys in the joint effort to protect the Rights of women and girls.
Mr. Gonzalo Koncke Pizzorno confirmed that in the forthcoming, UN Women would offer consultation on policy as well as the support of the Government of Vietnam in the process of strengthening the capacity to implement the international commitments, inbound commitments on gender equality and empowerment of women, in which, special emphasizing on vulnerable girls. Accordingly, UN Women would continue to promote the process of planning and budgeting of goals for gender equality, enhance the development and implementation of laws, policies and strategies to strengthen empowerment of women on economic aspect as well as improving accessing ability for women to decent work and other resources. Besides this, UN Women would continue to cooperate with the Government of Vietnam to eliminate gender violence, promote leadership and participation of women in policy-making processes at all levels, including policies related to reduction disaster risk and adaptation with climate change./.
